Spencer Boyd

28-Year-Old Driver
Freedom Racing Enterprises
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Boyd left Young's Motorsports at the end of last season and used the opportunity to buy some trucks and equipment from the shuttered GMS Racing organization. With that, the veteran driver is starting his own race team for 2024. Boyd has secured some sponsors and put Greg Ely in charge at the crew chief position, and he will set out racing for himself in the upcoming season. Boyd is a veteran of 108 Craftsman Truck Series starts, and despite owning one victory to his credit, he's never fared better than 17th in the driver points. With a new, small race team and limited resources he'll be challenged to crack the Top 25 in the driver standings this season. Read Past Outlooks
Returning to Young's Motorsports
Gander Outdoors Truck
January 5, 2023
Young's Motorsports and veteran driver Boyd are set to tackle the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series for a fifth season together. The partnership comes with a renewed sense of competition after Boyd suffered a dislocated shoulder in the second race of 2022 that put a damper on the season.
ANALYSIS
Boyd's injury-plagued 2022 season led to a distant 28th-place finish in the driver standings. He'll get a chance to hit the reset button with Young's Motorsports and a new season to makeup for that disappointment. Boyd will be back in the No. 12 Chevrolet with much of the same team members and sponsorship as last season.

Young's announced that Boyd would be returning for the full season in early January. They have sponsors lined up behind the effort and everyone is energized. However, Boyd has a lot to prove in 2023. He ended last season on a three-race DNF slump. He also only collected a lowly three Top-20 finishes for the season, finishing a distant 28th-place in the final driver standings. Boyd can do better and he has performed better in recent seasons. He and crew chief Ryan London will attempt to sort things out and get this team racing at least as competitively as the other Young's teams. This driver and team have Top-20 rankings potential, but they have a lot of work to do to get there.
Boyd stays with Young's Motorsports in the upcoming season, but moves from the team's No. 20 entry to the No. 12. A good sponsorship package is lining up behind the veteran driver and that's always a good sign for possible improvement. Boyd grabbed just one Top-10 and five Top-20 finishes last season. There's a lot of room for improvement here. He peddled the team's Chevrolet to a 24.7 average finish over the 22-race schedule. Boyd will be paired with crew chief Ryan London in the No. 12 Chevrolet team and the two will look to find gains immediately. Boyd has a lot of eyes on him this season and a lot on the line for his future in NASCAR.
Boyd has been confirmed for another full season of action in the Young's Chevy Silverado. The veteran pilot raced the full schedule last season and wound up 20th in the driver points with two Top-15 and six Top-20 finishes. Boyd will look to improve upon those numbers and lower his 24.2 average finish from last season. He has the capability to turn things around in this race team. In 2019 he posted a surprising win and two Top-10 finishes while averaging an 18.8 finish with this same race team across 18 starts. The move to full-time racing appears to have been a bit of a setback. Boyd is a seasoned NASCAR driver and this team will improve to some degree in 2021.
Boyd shifted his focus to the Cup Series late last season, but he still started a majority of the truck series schedule with 18 starts. Boyd turned in one of the more surprising wins in the Gander RV & Outdoors truck series last year when he upset the ranks at Talladega in October and grabbed his first-career win. He also registered two Top-10 finishes for the campaign. It's not known at the time of this writing whether Boyd is returning to the team, but it is speculated that he will return. Boyd brings a lot of enthusiasm and potential to the table, so if he returns in a full-time capacity, this team could climb the rankings a bit as a result.
Boyd competed full-time in the Xfinity Series last season. However, he makes the move into the Gander Outdoors Truck Series for 2019. He'll race full-time for the growing Young's Motorsports team. The No. 20 Chevy Silverado was piloted by a handful of young drivers last season to the tune of four Top-10 and nine Top-15 finishes. With the stability of Boyd behind the wheel each week in the upcoming campaign, this should improve. Crew chief, Andrew Abbott, is tabbed to return to the team and he should continue helping this team to grow. Boyd now has 47-combined starts between the Xfinity Series and Truck Series, so the improvement should be notable.
