Berni participated in the Blue Jackets' training camp despite being unsigned, doing so on a professional tryout deal. The defenseman was crowded out of the club's NHL plans by the offseason additions of Ivan Provorov and Damon Severson as well as Zach Werenski's return from injury. Berni may not have an NHL contract all season unless negotiations between the player and team improve drastically.
