O'Brien signed a one-year contract with AHL Toronto on Friday, Adam Kimelman of NHL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
O'Brien was selected in the first round (19th overall) by the Flyers in 2018 and spent the last three seasons with Boston University. O'Brien had eight goals and 32 points in 39 games as a senior in 2022-23, but the Flyers did not sign him to an entry-level deal, making him a free agent. The 23-year-old will try to get his professional career on track in the AHL. The speedy forward has a high hockey IQ but he'll likely need lots of playing time in the minors before potentially making the jump to the NHL.

2018 Fantasy Outlook
As a first-round draft selection in 2009, O'Brien was expected to ascend to the NHL level years ago, but it never happened. Almost a decade later, he's proven to be a solid producer at the AHL level but unable to get the job done at the highest rank. With just eight NHL goals to his name and none of them coming in the 10 games he played last year for Ottawa, O'Brien is likely to remain in the minors for the majority of the 2018-19 campaign. Barring an unprecedented rise to the top of the prospect pecking order, O'Brien won't be fantasy relevant in the near term.
