Qualifying offer on tap

June 18, 2019
The Bruins plan to retain their rights to Forsbacka-Karlsson by making him a qualifying offer, Eric Russo of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Forsbacka-Karlsson is slated to play in the Swedish Hockey League next season, but there is an expectation that the 22-year-old will resume his career with the Bruins at some point down the road. For now, the native of Stockholm will continue his development as a player in a strong league closer to home. Per Boston GM Don Sweeney, Forsbacka-Karlsson will "sit as a restricted free agent until he decides that he's ready to return." In 28 games for the Bruins this past season, Forsbacka-Karlsson logged three goals and nine points. The 2015 second-rounder profiles as a heady two-way forward who retains the necessary skills to secure full-time NHL duty eventually.

Forsbacka-Karlsson is in line to play in the Swedish Hockey League in 2019-20, but there's hope that the 22-year-old will resume his career with the Bruins at some point down the road. For now, the native of Stockholm will continue his development as a player in a strong league closer to home. In 28 games for the Bruins last season, Forsbacka-Karlsson logged three goals and nine points. The 2015 second-rounder profiles as a heady two-way forward who retains the necessary skills to secure full-time NHL duty eventually.
Forsbacka-Karlsson missed time this past season with a concussion, but when healthy, he logged 15 goals and 32 points in 58 games for AHL Providence during his first year as a pro. Looking ahead, the 6-foot-1, 192-pounder will face serious competition in order to secure a roster spot with the big club next season, but his solid two-way game down the middle gives him a chance to make the cut now that former third-line center Riley Nash is with the Blue Jackets.
Forsbacka-Karlsson, whom the Bruins selected 45th overall in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, is coming off a 2016-17 season in which he recorded 14 goals and 33 points in 39 games for Boston University, then tasted his first NHL action in a one-game April cameo with the big club. The 6-foot-1, 184-pounder profiles as a heady two-way center and has drawn comparisons to Patrice Bergeron, but at just 20 years old, he may be destined to start out by spending some time at the AHL level, barring injuries up the middle or a trade involving third-line pivot Ryan Spooner.
