Past Fantasy Outlooks
Wilson skated in only six games for the Sabres last year, but he had two points in that very limited audition. Now 28 years old, it's looking less and less likely he'll be able to repeat the 26-point campaign he had in 2016-17 with the Penguins, but Wilson can be a decent depth winger in a fourth-line role. With the Panthers running a bit thin on the wings, he could find some playing time this year, but it's tough to see him cracking double-digits in points. His only other major contribution is hits, so fantasy managers can safely leave Wilson in the player pool.
Acquired after 17 scoreless games with Detroit, Wilson played 49 games for Buffalo, scoring six goals and eight assists with a minus-17 rating. The performance didn't turn heads, but it did earn him a two-year extension with the Sabres. The 26-year-old is a bottom-six winger who offers a little scoring ability and some jam, and he's quite good at doing it, but even on a team that lacks depth scoring Wilson is not an option to step in. He's assured of a roster spot but anything more than 20 points should be a pleasant surprise.
Wilson enjoyed his first full NHL campaign this past season, and he tallied eight goals and 18 helpers over 78 games in a bottom-six role for the Penguins. The physical forward delivers jarring hits -- 167 last year -- but his lack of special-teams acumen renders him useful only in the deepest of fantasy leagues. It likely would take a significant number of injuries up front for the Ontario native to work his way into a top-six assignment.
