To complement third-round pick Deadrin Senat of South Florida, Atlanta decided to acquire a veteran from the same alma mater in Terrell McClain -- a standout from the Bulls program six years his senior. McClain is a solid run defender but not a dominant player at the position, serving primarily as a role player with 29 starts and 64 games played across seven professional seasons with Carolina, New England, Houston, Dallas and Washington. He's the favorite to earn the starting role for Week 1, although it would not be surprising if Senat were to command a higher snap count over the course of the 16-game slate.
The former Cowboy remains in the NFC East after inking a four-year deal with the Redskins this offseason. McClain anchored the Cowboy’s defensive line last season, recording 41 tackles to go along with 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and eight quarterback pressures. The 29-year-old should become a staple in Washington’s defensive packages as he works alongside Ziggy Hood, Phil Taylor and Stacey McGee.
McClain will provide depth at defensive tackle after recording 19 tackles and a sack in 13 games last season
McClain was a poor fit in Houston's scheme last season, but he'll get a chance to resurrect his career as part of Rod Marinelli's defensive line rotation in Dallas.
McClain, a former third-round pick (65th overall) of Carolina, is looking to revive his career with the Texans in 2013. There's certainly motivation on his side, but not opportunity. He'll battle for the backup nose tackle job with 2013 sixth-round pick Chris Jones. It's unlikely the Texans carry three nose tackles.
Will get a shot as a starting defensive tackle, where he'll be needed to improve the Panthers' awful run defense.
Will back up Corey Irvin at defensive tackle, although the rookie could make an impact with a strong showing during the preseason.
