Bumped up from practice squad
TEMinnesota Vikings
November 4, 2021
Stocker was signed to the active roster Thursday, Craig Peters of the Vikings' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Stocker has been back and forth between the practice squad and active roster over the past few weeks. He appeared in the Vikings' Week 6 and Week 8 contests against the Panthers and Cowboys, respectively, playing a total of 26 snaps from scrimmage in those games and converting his only target into a seven-yard reception. With Ben Ellefson (foot/knee) placed on IR, it's likely Stocker will file in behind Tyler Conklin and Chris Herndon on the Vikings' tight end depth chart against the Ravens on Sunday.

Though he only fielded 44.9 percent of the Titans' offensive snaps last season, Stocker ranked as the sixth-best tight end in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus. That lofty rank can be attributed to his blocking prowess, as he's helped lead Tennessee to 15th (2017) and seventh-place (2018) finishes in rush offense over the past two campaigns. His receiving chops are not the strength of his skill set, with Stocker averaging 8.5 receptions per season since entering the NFL in 2011. His competitor for the No. 2 tight end job (Logan Paulsen) isn't a refined pass catcher either, meaning whoever opens up more holes in the ground game stands to get the majority of the snaps in two tight-end packages alongside Austin Hooper.
Entering his second season with the Titans, Stocker hasn't logged more than 10 receptions since 2012 and that's unlikely to change in 2018. While his value as an in-line blocker can't be ignored, such a role isn't conducive to fantasy success.
Stocker heads into his seventh season with essentially the same mandate as the previous six -- help clear lanes in the running game and snag the occasional pass. The veteran tallied a career-low five receptions for 23 yards in 2016 and hasn't notched double-digit catches since 2012, so if he does manage to latch onto a roster spot, his fantasy contributions would likely be negligible.
Stocker's primary value in 2015 once again came from his blocking, which helped pave the way for Doug Martin's 1,402 yards on the ground, and a fifth-overall ranking for the Bucs' rushing offense. The 27-year-old otherwise contributed a nominal nine receptions, and only his second career touchdown. With fading veteran Brandon Myers and unproven Tevin Westbrook as his only competition for a roster spot, the stage appears set for Stocker to once again retain his customary role heading into the new season.
Stocker agreed to a three-year contract extension with the Bucs in the offseason, showing the measure of trust the team has in him. He spent 2014 backing up Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Brandon Myers at tight end, catching just seven passes for 41 yards on the season. Seferian-Jenkins is emerging as a sleeper at the position, while Myers also signed an extension, so the roles seem fairly well defined. If status quo is maintained, Stocker could be looking at a similar number of touches to last season.
Stocker has never quite lived up to his potential since entering the league in 2011. Following an injury-marred 2013, he's in line to work in tandem with (and presumably behind) draftee Austin Seferian-Jenkins and free agent acquisition Brandon Myers.
Stocker is projected to be the Buccaneers' No. 1 TE in 2013, but with just 28 catches for 257 yards and a touchdown in his first two seasons, he is unlikely to make an impact in fantasy.
Playing behind the now-traded Kellen Winslow, Stocker only had 12 receptions for 92 yards in 14 games played as a rookie fourth-round draft pick in 2011. Stocker is good blocker with good hands so even though the team picked up TE Dallas Clark via free agency, Stocker will see more action in 2012 and would probably start if the oft-injured Clark were to miss any game action. Keep an eye on Stocker to see if he can actually be more productive with more playing time in 2012.
At 6-6, 250, Stocker fits nicely as the No. 2 tight end for the Buccaneers. With his tall frame comes good strength and power, as evidenced by his leading all tight ends in the bench press at the NFL Combine. A fourth-round pick out of Tennessee, Stocker isn’t the fastest of the rookie tight ends, but he has the power to seal off the edge and effectively run-block. Look for his presence to allow Kellen Winslow to be more active in the passing game.
