McManis (hamstring) will not return to Sunday's wild-card bout in New Orleans.
ANALYSIS
The Bears ruled McManis out to return just as the second half of Sunday's contest began. The veteran safety's absence will be a fairly substantial blow to Chicago's special-teams unit.

McManis has been one of the Bears’ top special teams contributors over the past three seasons, but never received a legitimate opportunity to compete for a starting job during that time with Charles Tillman and Tim Jennings entrenched as the top two players on the cornerback depth chart. However, with the Bears demanding more press-coverage principles from its corners under new coordinator Vic Fangio, the smallish Jennings won’t be guaranteed his starting gig, opening the door for McManis, Alan Ball, and Al Louis-Jean to showcase themselves. It seems unlikely that McManis will flash enough during camp to come away with a starting role, so heavy special teams duty will probably be in the offing again in 2015.
McManis was active for 15 games with the Bears last season, with most of his duties coming exclusively on special teams. As one of the team's better performers on those units last season, McManis has a decent chance to claim a spot on the 53-man roster out of training camp, even though he looks to be no better than the Bears' No. 6 cornerback.
McManis will fight for a reserve role in the defensive backfield.
McManis will provide depth for the Texans' secondary.
McManis made the Texans last year, seeing time both in the secondary and in the return game. The return ability may help again in 2011, as he'll need to break out from a bunch of at least five guys looking for two available positions.
McManis faces an uphill battle to make the team at a cornerback position that is deep.
