2023 Fantasy Outlook
Howard earned his fourth Pro Bowl nod in 2022 despite playing through groin injuries all season, but those accolades don't overshadow the decline in play from a cornerback meant to be one of the league's few true lockdown options. If Howard can return to All-Pro levels, or something close to it when back to full health, pairing him with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and new teammate Jalen Ramsey should guarantee Miami one of the most dominant secondaries in the NFL. Though neither Howard nor Ramsey were statistically themselves in last season there's bounce-back potential for them in 2023. Read Past Outlooks

The Dolphins released Howard (foot) on Wednesday with a failed physical and post-June 1 designation.
ANALYSIS
The move was expected after the Dolphins informed Howard in February that he would be released at the start of the league year. Once healthy, Howard will likely be in high demand, as the 30-year-old cornerback is a four-time Pro Bowler and has posted at least 12 passes defensed in six of the past seven seasons.

Headed for release

Howard will be released by the Dolphins in a cost-cutting move, Marcel Louis-Jacques of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Howard is the Dolphins' longest-tenured player, and if he's officially jettisoned after June 1, his exit will prompt a savings of $18.5 million for cap-strapped Miami, albeit while also creating roughly $23 million in dead money over the next two seasons. The veteran cornerback, a four-time Pro Bowler and one-time first-team All-Pro, should have a solid market for his services on the open market despite the fact he'll turn 31 in July.

One of the top defensive players in the league, and a true 'lockdown' cornerback, Howard and the Dolphins have finally agreed on a long-term extension. Heading into his age-29 season, Howard will once again line up alongside Byron Jones to form arguably the top cornerback tandem in the NFL, at least when Jones is healthy enough to come off the PUP list. Howard has 15 INTs over the last two seasons.
Howard is coming off an All-Pro campaign in which he recorded double-digit interceptions for the first time in his career. That feat hadn't been managed since 2007, when Antonio Cromartie managed 10 picks, and Howard's 22 interceptions since 2017 now leads the NFL. As he lines up opposite Byron Jones, Howard will once again be relied upon as one of the pillars of Miami's defense.
Howard's sensational on-field play earned him a five-year, $76.5 million deal with Miami last year, but injuries have prevented the 27-year-old from making the impact his contract would imply. Having missed 24 games over his four-season career, including 11 contests in 2019, Howard now faces the task of fully recovering form offseason knee surgery in time to suit up Week 1. When healthy, he'll suit up alongside Byron Jones to form arguably the toughest cornerback duo in the league, but it isn't clear if health is a hurdle he'll be able to consistently surpass.
Howard's sensational 2018 campaign not only earned him Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors, but also secure him a five-year, $76.5 million contract with the Dolphins. Now the highest paid cornerback in the NFL, Howard is locked in as one of the foundational pieces of Miami's defense for the foreseeable future. He'll work to earn a second Pro Bowl nod in 2019.
Following an impressive sophomore season, Howard remains locked in as one of Miami's starting cornerbacks. Given that the 2016 second-rounder was also able to stay healthy throughout the entire 2017 season, any injury concerns still lingering from his rookie year have been extinguished. The 25-year-old was able to lock down former first-round receiver DeVante Parker throughout much of training camp, and could emerge as a legitimate No. 1 cornerback this year if he can elevate his game to the next level.
Howard was the team’s second-round pick in 2016. In today’s NFL, you can never have enough good cornerbacks but the Dolphins are well on their way with Howard and Bryon Maxwell. The defense could be the strength of this team should it stay healthy and a secondary that has been the unit’s weakness in the past could soon be one its strengths.
Howard was the Dolphins second round pick in the 2016 draft. He was expected to compete for a starting job from day one but knee surgery may put those plans on hold for the immediate future. Howard could still land a starting spot if he can recover quickly but the more likely scenario is that he will begin the season in a reserve role as he proves to the coaching staff that he can cover the league's best receivers.
