Thigpen signed with the Browns on Tuesday, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports.

ANALYSIS
After Rex Grossman reportedly turned down an opportunity to sign on and play Sunday, Cleveland has turned to Thigpen, whose last NFL snap came in 2012 as a member of the Bills. Thigpen signed with the Browns in May of 2014 but was cut during the preseason after a less-than-stellar training camp. Cleveland has not announced whether Thigpen or rookie Connor Shaw, who is expected to be elevated from the practice squad, would get the start Sunday against Baltimore in the event that Brian Hoyer is unavailable, but neither quarterback projects as a valuable fantasy commodity.

Thigpen will compete for a backup quarterback with the Browns in 2014. He currently sits behind Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel on the depth chart, and would likely only be used in an emergency situation.

Coach Chan Gailey pretty much locked Thigpen's teammate Brad Smith into the No. 3 quarterback role this season. That means Thigpen will be battling Vince Young all summer for the role of main backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick. There's a good chance the loser of that battle ends up getting cut.

Thigpen was signed as a free agent and is the clear-cut backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick. There's little value there, but if Fitz ever did get hurt, Thigpen might be worth a waiver-wire pickup in deeper leagues. He's very familiar with Chan Gailey's fantasy friendly offense and previously threw 18 touchdowns in it in just 11 starts. Like Fitzpatrick, he's a good runner out of the pocket as well.

Thigpen impressed the Dolphins in limited playing time last season, enough so that he was named the backup quarterback to Chad Henne. The problem is the Dolphins have four quarterbacks they deem worthy of a roster spot and since traditional wisdom states that you should only carry three, Thigpen could be the subject of many trade rumors this season.

Thigpen surprisingly became a very effective fantasy quarterback in 2008, using his excellent mobility to make plays on the run, both through the air and as a runner. The Chiefs have not officially named their starting quarterback, but it’s obvious that Matt Cassel will be awarded the position eventually. Thigpen would likely need an injury to Cassel to be fantasy-relevant in 2009, but if such a situation occurred, he would become a hot free agent pickup immediately.

Thigpen took most of the second-team snaps ahead of Damon Huard in minicamps and could emerge as Kansas City’s top backup. He’s poised beyond his years and boasts a strong arm, so the Chiefs may elect to give him a look if Brodie Croyle is removed due to injury or ineffectiveness.

Thigpen is a project with all of the physical tools to be an NFL quarterback, but he needs to step up to the level of competition since playing in the NFL is a bit different than playing at Coastal Carolina.
