Washington is trying to make the team as the final wide receiver and a special teams player.
Washington is the biggest body in an otherwise smallish Ravens' receiving corps (6-3, 217), but he still doesn't project to be much better than the team's third or fourth receiver. In two seasons with New England he had just one reception for three yards, and in a run-first Baltimore offense don't expect those numbers to improve much.
The departure of Donte Stallworth figures to open the door for Washington -- a special teams ace in 2007 -- to compete for a more significant role in the offense this year. He has nowhere to go but up after recording zero catches last season, but there are still plenty of mouths for QB Tom Brady to feed and Washington needs for a thing or two to break his way to make any sort of fantasy impact.
Washington, who can swap stories about both the University of Tennessee and hamstrings with new teammate Donte Stallworth, will have plenty of competition for a significant role with the Pats, who have a slew of wideouts under contract. That said, when healthy, Washington's size/speed combo gives the team the sort of red zone threat the team has been looking for at the position over the last few years.
Washington is a talented receiver, but due to the Bengals' superb receiver depth and Washington's lack of special teams skill he is unlikely to be on the team once the season starts. If he does remain, he will be in the mix for the third/fourth wideout slots.
Washington is in a major position battle with Peter Warrick and rookie Chris Henry for the third receiver spot.
Washington will always have to worry about the fused vertebrae in his neck succumbing to an NFL hit, but he has great size and speed and would be a perfect complement to Chad Johnson, moving the more possession-oriented Peter Warrick to the slot.
Washington is a tall, physically gifted receiver who needs to prove that he can overcome injuries (including recent neck surgery) and be a good citizen in the locker room (he was often a team distraction at Tennessee). He's projected to be the third wideout for the Bengals by midseason.
