ANALYSIS

Simmons signed with the Saints in March of 2007 after spending the last nine years on the Bengals. He has been slowed so far this offseason during organized team activities due to arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and will have to battle Mark Simoneau for the starting middle linebacker spot during training camp. Though Simmons is the early favorite to win the starting job, Simoneau could definitely end up the starter, particularly if Simmons takes longer than expected to rehabilitate his knee.
Will open the season as starting middle linebacker in place of the suspended Odell Thurman. Will start at either middle or weakside linebacker once Thurman returns. Now a veteran, Simmons is always a solid source of tackles that also tends to be responsible for a few turnovers each season.
Starting weak-side linebacker. Always a good source of tackles, with an occasional interception and sack thrown in.
Probably the best player on the Bengals' defense, long working in the shadows of Takeo Spikes before he left for the Bills in 2003. Consistently among the league leaders in tackles.
Simmons moves to the outside this year, which should free him to do more pass rushing. Look for a few less tackles, and a few more sacks, this year.
