Weekly Rankings: Week 9 Value Meter

Weekly Rankings: Week 9 Value Meter

This article is part of our Weekly Rankings series.

SUNDAY UPDATE COMPLETE.

Bye Weeks: Bengals, Falcons, Rams and Saints.

Stupid Early London Game: Jaguars vs. Texans, 9:30 a.m. ET.

Welcome to the Weekly Value Meter Rankings. This is a guide to help you decide who to start and sit in a given week. It's is not a season-long ranking nor a draft guide, and it's also not really intended as a free agent guide. While I appreciate that you want my opinion on pickups, every league is different, and your decision on whether to add/drop a particular player might also be dictated by other factors than who is rated higher in a given week.

Here are my operating assumptions for the rankings:

- The RB/WR/TE position rankings are for PPR leagues.
- The Flex rankings are for Standard leagues.
- 1 point per 10 rushing/receiving yards.
- 1 point per 20 passing yards.
- 4 points per passing touchdowns.

These are the rankings I use when I make my start/sit decisions. Please consult the rankings first before asking "Should I start Patrick Mahomes or Eli Manning?"

These are my particular rankings. If you want a second opinion elsewhere on the site, you can see our Weekly Projections.

Starting after Week 1, the rankings for the subsequent week will first post on Tuesday nights, roughly around 10:00 pm ET. I will then do a set of updates before kickoff on Thursday, and again before kickoff on Sunday morning.

I welcome debate on the rankings in the comments. Please keep

Quarterbacks

1.*Aaron Rodgers GB at LAC
Note: For the fourth consecutive week, listed as limited with a knee injury. ***Full practice Thursday and Friday.***
2.Russell Wilson SEA vs. TB
3.Dak Prescott DAL at NYG
4.*Deshaun Watson HOU at JAX
Note: (Eye) Full practice Wednesday. ***Practiced with a visor, may wear one during the game Sunday.***
5.*Derek Carr OAK vs. DET
Note: Love the matchup this week against the Lions. First home game in Oakland since Week 2.
6.Matthew Stafford DET at OAK
7.*Tom Brady NE at BAL
Note: (Shoulder) Limited on Wednesday.
8.*Josh Allen BUF vs. WAS
Note: Really struggled with the wind on Sunday, but also with the Eagles' pass rush and ability to strip the ball when he scrambled.
9.*Jameis Winston TB at SEA
Note: Classic better quarterback in fantasy than real life.
10.Lamar Jackson BAL vs. NE
11.*Kirk Cousins MIN at KC
Note: 23 of 26 for 285 yards last Thursday, but no touchdowns - frequently had to scramble early in the game, and then late the Vikings were conservative in protecting their lead.
12.*Gardner Minshew JAC vs. HOU
Note: Has another potentially good matchup against a Texans defense that just lost J.J. Watt for the season.
13.*Matt Moore KC vs. MIN
Note: Played reasonably well in the loss to the Packers - 24 of 36 for 267 yards and two touchdowns. Pat Mahomes's status for Week 9 hasn't yet been determined. ***Dueling reports out there - Ian Rapoport says that Mahomes won't play, but ESPN's Ed Werder suggests that there's a possibility that Mahomes will play.*** - MAHOMES OFFICIALLY OUT.
14.Jacoby Brissett IND at PIT
15.*Daniel Jones NYG vs. DAL
Note: His lost fumble/lateral helped put the Giants in a hole, but he also positively made a lot of plays, throwing for four touchdowns. He has a tough draw Monday night against the Cowboys.
16.*Jimmy Garoppolo SF at ARI
Note: Because the running game is so dominant, Garoppolo is rarely asked to do much, which hurts his fantasy output.
17.*Mitchell Trubisky CHI at PHI
Note: Got the dreaded 'vote of confidence' in the starting lineup following Sunday's brutal loss.
18.Philip Rivers LAC vs. GB
19.*Baker Mayfield CLE at DEN
Note: Played reasonably well, though his one big mistake, an interception of a shuttle pass, was one of three big first-quarter gaffes that put the Browns in a deep hole that they couldn't dig out of.
20.*Carson Wentz PHI vs. CHI
Note: Protected the ball in adverse conditions against the Bills and the wind last week, while the run game was cranking.
21.*Kyler Murray ARZ vs. SF
Note: Frequently had to get rid of the ball early in the face of the Saints' pass rush.
22.*Kyle Allen CAR vs. TEN
Note: Got smashed by the Niners but will get another start this week against the Titans.
23.*Ryan Tannehill TEN at CAR
Note: The three touchdowns (two on short drives) paper over an otherwise meager output.
24.*Sam Darnold NYJ at MIA
Note: Just got sacked again while I was typing this. He also sprained his left thumb in the loss to the Jags, but is expected to continue playing. ***Does not have an injury designation.***
25.*Ryan Fitzpatrick MIA vs. NYJ
Note: Completely fell apart after the first quarter on Monday night. Will remain the starter this week.
26.*Mason Rudolph PIT vs. IND
Note: Ugly start on Monday night, but recovered to put up 251 passing yards and two touchdowns.
27.*Brandon Allen DEN vs. CLE
Note: Getting the start this week in place of the injured Joe Flacco. Drew Lock hasn't yet been cleared for practice, let alone added to the 53-man active roster, so it could be a multi-week evaluation period. Drew Lock won't practice until Week 11.
28.*Dwayne Haskins WAS at BUF
Note: Getting the first-team reps on Wednesday and Thursday. ***Getting the start Sunday with Case Keenum ruled out. Colt McCoy will be the backup.***
29.*Patrick Mahomes KC vs. MIN
Note: (Kneecap) Status for Week 9 is uncertain at this point. Limited practice Wednesday - is it noteworthy that many sportsbooks have pulled the Vikings-Chiefs line down, and that the SuperContest is guessing that he'll play with their line for their contest? ***Dueling reports, between 'won't play' (Ian Rapoport) and 'chance that he'll play' (Ed Werder).*** - OFFICIALLY OUT.
30.*Case Keenum WAS at BUF
Note: (Concussion) Will retain the starting job if he's cleared. However, he's still currently in the concussion protocol. Limited practice Wednesday and Thursday, remains in the concussion protocol. ***Ruled out for Sunday.***
31.*Cam Newton CAR vs. TEN
Note: (Foot) Won't be cleared to start this week, but isn't necessarily precluded from returning to practice. ***Did not practice this week, and his recovery is going slower than expected - he went to visit a specialist on Friday.***
32.*Joe Flacco DEN vs. CLE
Note: Out with a neck injury, could be out 5-to-6 weeks, maybe even longer. Won't need surgery, but 4-to-6 weeks absence confirmed, with the common sentiment being that he'll need the full six weeks to recover.*** Placed on IR.***

Running Backs

1.*Christian McCaffrey CAR vs. TEN
Note: (Knee) Limited practice Wednesday, but elevated to a full practice Thursday.
2.Dalvin Cook MIN at KC
3.Ezekiel Elliott DAL at NYG
4.*Aaron Jones GB at LAC
Note: Briefly left Sunday night's masterpiece with a sore shoulder but later returned and continued to dominate. (Shoulder) Listed as limited on Wednesday. ***Full practice Friday, removed from the injury list.***
5.Saquon Barkley NYG vs. DAL
6.*Nick Chubb CLE at DEN
Note: The two fumbles were disastrous, there's no getting around that, but despite that he ran the ball well otherwise.
7.*Leonard Fournette JAC vs. HOU
Note: Of all the convoluted ways to prevent Fournette from getting into the end zone, last week might have been the worst. He'll get there.
8.*Tevin Coleman SF at ARI
Note: Looked like he was shot out of a cannon against the Panthers.
9.Derrick Henry TEN at CAR
10.Chris Carson SEA vs. TB
11.Le'Veon Bell NYJ at MIA
12.Marlon Mack IND at PIT
13.*Josh Jacobs OAK vs. DET
Note: Played through his sore shoulder, as he vowed. Limited at Wednesday's practice. ***Cleared from the injury list.***
14.*Jaylen Samuels PIT vs. IND
Note: (Knee) Deemed 'ready to return' this week against the Colts after sitting out Monday night. Could step into the starting role this week. ***Conner unlikely to play - Samuels could have a heavy workload.***
15.Mark Ingram BAL vs. NE
16.Jordan Howard PHI vs. CHI
17.Royce Freeman DEN vs. CLE
18.*Austin Ekeler LAC vs. GB
Note: Criminally underused in the win over the Bears.
19.Sony Michel NE at BAL
20.*Phillip Lindsay DEN vs. CLE
Note: (Wrist) Limited at Wednesday's practice.
21.*Melvin Gordon LAC vs. GB
Note: One good midsized touchdown run salvaged an otherwise blah day, but it's encouraging that he still gets the red zone work.
22.*James White NE at BAL
Note: ***Landed on the injury list with a toe injury as questionable, but it's considered to be a minor injury.***
23.*Carlos Hyde HOU at JAX
Note: ***Hyde won't have LT Laremy Tunsil (shoulder) to run behind, though RT Tytus Howard will be back after a two-game absence.***
24.David Montgomery CHI at PHI
25.*Ty Johnson DET at OAK
Note: Had seven carries versus 12 for Tra Carson, but also had two runs of 10+ yards called back due to penalties, so his role could be a little underestimated going forward. ***Carson placed on injured reserve with his hamstring injury.***
26.*Adrian Peterson WAS at BUF
Note: (Ankle) Sat out practice Thursday, following his practice regimen before his revenge game against the Vikings last Thursday. ***Cleared from the injury list.***
27.Jamaal Williams GB at LAC
28.Duke Johnson HOU at JAX
29.Frank Gore BUF vs. WAS
30.Ronald Jones TB at SEA
31.*LeSean McCoy KC vs. MIN
Note: Was the primary back ahead of Damien Williams early in the game, but after a lost fumble in the third quarter he was pretty scarce.
32.*Miles Sanders PHI vs. CHI
Note: Had a monster run against the Bills, but later suffered a shoulder injury. X-rays cleared him of any structural damage. Boston Scott would step in behind Jordan Howard if Sanders is forced to sit this week, and Darren Sproles could return to practice this week. Sat out practice Wednesday, but then returned on Thursday.
33.*Kenyan Drake ARZ vs. SF
Note: Traded to the Cardinals on Monday, and could step right in on Thursday against the Niners. 'Going to be in certain packages' on Thursday night.
34.*Mark Walton MIA vs. NYJ
Note: Had a bigger share of the carries than Ballage on Monday night.
35.Damien Williams KC vs. MIN
36.Peyton Barber TB at SEA
37.Alexander Mattison MIN at KC
38.Devin Singletary BUF vs. WAS
39.Tarik Cohen CHI at PHI

43.Nyheim Hines IND at PIT
44.Trey Edmunds PIT vs. IND

Note: Sat out practice Tuesday after sustaining an ankle injury on Sunday. Expected to be active after a limited practice Wednesday.
47.Darrel Williams KC vs. MIN
48.Dion Lewis TEN at CAR
49.*Rashaad Penny SEA vs. TB
Note: Still exists! Still could be good if given the opportunity.
50.Boston Scott PHI vs. CHI
51.*Brandon Bolden NE at BAL
Note: James White (toe) is limited.***
52.DeAndre Washington OAK vs. DET
53.Reggie Bonnafon CAR vs. TEN
54.*Zach Zenner ARZ vs. SF
Note: Johnson and Edmonds are not expected to play, and Kenyan Drake could be limited Thursday night, so Zenner might get a decent amount of work. Alfred Morris could also be in the picture.
55.*Darren Sproles PHI vs. CHI
Note: (Quad) Limited practice Wednesday. ***Full practice Friday, removed from the injury list.***
56.*Raheem Mostert SF at ARI
Note: (Knee) Held out of practice Tuesday - it might be difficult for him to get cleared in time for Thursday. Listed as questionable but is expected to play Thursday night.
57.Tony Pollard DAL at NYG
58.Jalen Richard OAK vs. DET
59.*Jeff Wilson SF at ARI
Note: Could see his role substantially increased if both Breida and Mostert have to sit out Thursday.
60.*Justin Jackson LAC vs. GB
Note: (Calf) Removed from the injury list, but third string behind Gordon and Ekeler.
61.Wayne Gallman NYG vs. DAL
62.Jordan Wilkins IND at PIT
63.Ryquell Armstead JAC vs. HOU
64.Dare Ogunbowale TB at SEA
65.*Rex Burkhead NE at BAL

66.*David Johnson ARZ vs. SF
Note: (Ankle) Listed as a DNP on Monday's practice estimate. Not expected to play Thursday night.
67.*James Conner PIT vs. IND

68.*Chase Edmonds ARZ vs. SF
Note: Likely out multiple weeks with a hamstring injury suffered against the Saints.
69.*Chris Thompson WAS at BUF
Note: (Toe) Did not practice Wednesday. ***Ruled out again this week.***
70.*Benny Snell PIT vs. IND
Note: Injured his knee Monday night against the Dolphins. Needed surgery, out two-to-three weeks.

Note: Coming off his first 100-yard game of the season.

16.John Brown BUF vs. WAS

20.Alshon Jeffery PHI vs. CHI
21.Michael Gallup DAL at NYG
22.D.J. Moore CAR vs. TEN
23.*Adam Thielen MIN at KC
Note: (Hamstring) Expected to play - at least, that's what was said on Friday last week. We'll see what happens in practice before bumping him back up. Limited practices Wednesday and Thursday - my guess now is that he plays, but might have a snap count. ***Listed as 50-50 in some early weekend reports, but a report from Adam Schefter late Saturday night suggested that Thielen will play.***

38.Kenny Stills HOU at JAX
39.Terry McLaurin WAS at BUF
40.*Sammy Watkins KC vs. MIN
Note: Eight targets in his return, but all of them were short. He's the third option in the passing game, though, behind Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce.
