Throws three touchdowns in Win over Huskers
November 28, 2016
Beathard went 10-for-15 for 144 yards and three scores in Friday's win over Nebraska.
ANALYSIS
The senior quarterback went over 100 yards for the first time Nov. 5 on Friday as he helped lead the Hawkeyes to a convincing win over their rival. He also managed to avoid tossing an interception for the first time in November. Beathard ends the regular season with 1,874 yards and a 58.6 completion percentage to go with 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He attempted 84 less passes than he did a season ago, which resulted in nearly 1,000 less yards through the air. Part of Beathard's numbers decline in 2016 can be attributed to the losses of Matt VandeBerg and George Kittle at different points of the season.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2016
2015
Beathard put together an excellent first season at the helm of Iowa’s offense, leading the Hawkeyes to the Big 10 Title game and the Rose Bowl. He completed 61.6% of his passes for 2,809 yards, 17 touchdowns, and five picks. He was a bit limited physically down the stretch last season due to a hip injury and he also had to undergo sports hernia surgery shortly after the Rose Bowl. Beathard should be primed for another strong season thanks to his experience and comfort level within the offense, but Iowa’s run-first approach does limit his upside, although Beathard has shown to be a competent runner as evidenced by his six touchdowns on the ground last season. One potential reason for concern with Beathard will be his supporting cast given that Matt Vandeberg and George Kittle are the only returning starters among pass catchers.
Iowa’s quarterback competition/controversy dragged into the regular season last year, limiting both Beathard and Jake Rudock’s values during a tough season for the Hawkeyes. Beathard got the start in Iowa’s bowl game, however, and Rudock saw the writing on the wall and transferred to Michigan. Now that Beathard has taken over the starting quarterback job, he’ll be tasked with vindicating coach Kirk Ferentz’s decision to give him the keys to the offense. Last year’s sample size (52-for-92, 645 yards, five touchdowns, two interceptions) is too small to accurately predict how Beathard will as the full-time starter this season, so let’s examine his skillset and surrounding cast. Beathard adds some mobility, as evidenced by his 156 yards on 28 attempts (5.57 YPC) last season. He won’t have Brandon Scherff to protect his blind side, but Beathard should have three returning starters on the O-Line to protect him. Wideout Tevaun Smith looks poised to emerge as a true No. 1 receiver for Beathard, however, so those two could be a tandem to watch. Some less promising news is the status of tight end Jake Duzey, who finished third on the team in receptions (36) and receiving yards (392) last year. Duzey is questionable to start the year due to a spring knee injury, and it’s possible that he might miss multiple games.
