Sets NCAA steals record
GMerrimack
February 24, 2020
Hayes supplied 19 points (8-15 FG, 1-2 3Pt, 2-2 FT), six assists, four steals and three rebounds across 35 minutes Sunday in Merrimack's 65-57 loss to Mount St. Mary's.
ANALYSIS
Though Merrimack saw its spot atop the Northeast Conference standings get a little shakier after the loss, Hayes' history-making performance Sunday provided a bit of a silver lining. With the four thefts, Hayes became the NCAA's all-division career leader in steals (452), surpassing Tennyson Whitted, who accumulated 448 steals during his four-year career at Division III Ramapo College from 2000-03. Hayes racked up the majority of his steals while Merrimack played at the Division II level over the first three seasons of his career, but production hasn't slowed much while he's made the jump with the Warriors to Division I during his senior season. Through 30 games, Hayes is averaging 10.4 points, 6.4 assists, 4.6 boards and a Division 1-best 3.9 steals per contest.
