Dispatched to MiLB camp
The Mariners assigned Weigel to their minor-league camp Monday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Though his resume includes four big-league relief appearances, Weigel never looked like a good bet to make the Mariners' Opening Day bullpen after signing with the team on a minor-league deal late in the offseason. His lack of a 40-man roster spot means that he'll have to impress at Triple-A Tacoma before warranting consideration for a possible promotion to the big club.

James Anderson breaks down all the fantasy-relevant prospects in the NL East, including Marlins righty Sixto Sanchez, who should make his MLB debut this summer.
2017 Fantasy Outlook
The Braves scouting and player development staff can take great pride in Weigel's 2016 season. He was a hard-throwing reliever at Houston whose lack of control had most pegging him for a bullpen role as a professional. However, the Braves successfully transitioned him to a starter, and after a dominant year at Low-A where he posted a 25.8 percent strikeout rate with a palatable nine percent walk rate, Weigel (a seventh-round pick) looks like one of the steals of the 2015 draft. His repertoire includes a mid-90s fastball, a quality changeup that flashes plus and a slider that works as a useful chase pitch when he sequences well. The late movement he gets on all of his pitches is what really stands out, and it's that late life that allows him to be effectively wild when his command is not on point. His 6-foot-6, 220-pound frame is ideal for handling a starter's workload, and he could move fast after holding his own in a three-start run with Double-A Mississippi to close out the year. This is an under-the-radar arm with mid-rotation upside.
