2024 Fantasy Outlook
Steer tends to be overshadowed a bit in the Reds' rebuild, as he doesn't have the power of Christian Encarnacion-Strand or the speed of Elly De La Cruz or the hit tool of Matt McLain. However, Steer does a lot well and showed in his first full season in Cincinnati that he has the potential to be a long-term foundational piece for the organization. At 25 years old, Steer struck out just over 20 percent of the time and notched 23 homers and 15 steals while moving around between first base (73 games), third base (47 games), outfield (47 games) and second base (16 games). While he may not light up Statcast with his batted-ball numbers -- in fact Steer ranked in the bottom 26 percent of the league in hard-hit rate -- he has an exceptional approach at the plate and does not often go chasing outside the strike zone. He had more homers and a higher OPS on the road than he did at home last season, so it wasn't all GABP-driven. Read Past Outlooks
Opens in outfield
Steer started in left field and went 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base, two RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's 8-2 win over the Nationals on Opening Day.
ANALYSIS
Steer was part of a productive lower-half of the order, which combined to go 8-for-19 and was responsible for all eight runs and RBI. He qualifies at multiple positions, but the offseason plan was to use him primarily in the outfield. Steer led the team in home runs (23) and RBI (86) last season while stealing a fantasy-helpful 15 bases.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Backup at shortstop?
C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic reports Steer is now Cincinnati's top backup at shortstop following Matt McLain's shoulder injury.
ANALYSIS
McLain will begin the season on the injured list and Noelvi Marte is suspended 80 games for a PED violation, leaving the Reds notably shorthanded at shortstop. Steer offers plenty of positional versatility between second base, third base and the outfield, but he's not likely to be seeing action at shortstop despite the current roster predicament. Erik Gonzalez remains in camp as a non-roster invitee, and the Reds could also re-sign Josh Harrison, who opted out of his minor-league deal earlier this week.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Part of the package of prospects the Twins sent to Cincinnati in the Tyler Mahle trade, Steer finds himself in a good situation from a home park and playing time standpoint. He played 14 games at third base, nine games at first base and five games at second base, and he should once again move around the diamond a bit, depending on the performance of veterans Joey Votto and Mike Moustakas. With the Reds in a rebuild and Steer having mastered Triple-A, playing time is less of a concern than output. He isn't a great athlete or runner, so it will have to be his bat that carries him. Steer, who turned 25 this offseason, lacks plus raw power or a plus hit tool, but he could hit around .240 with 20 home runs over a full season while being a good home streamer.
