ANALYSIS
Heredia thrived upon signing with the Dodgers in 2017, hitting over .400 at his first two rookie-league stops. However, he stalled in Class-A ball, struggling with a .204/.314/.375 slash line and a whopping 147 strikeouts in 388 plate appearances with High-A Rancho Cucamonga last season.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

Heredia made his stateside debut in the AZL and 26 games later he had earned a promotion to the Midwest League. The story isn’t that he struggled in 26 games at Low-A, but rather that he did so much damage over five weeks in the AZL and Pioneer League that the only way the Dodgers could give him a challenge was to promote him to Great Lakes. Of course, the .562 BABIP he posted in his 124 plate appearances in rookie ball inflated his numbers, and he needed the dose of reality that Low-A pitchers provided. He can look overmatched when he gets into a pitcher’s count, but that is not unusual for 18-year-old power hitters. While he has sneaky speed now, his body is quite thick (6-foot-2, 200 pounds), so he won’t steal many bases when he reaches the majors in three or four years. It is a power/batting average profile that will only fit in an outfield corner. His plus power to all fields is not debatable, but we should find out a lot more about his hit tool this season.
Part of the Dodgers outstanding 2015 international signing class, Heredia was an above average hitter in the Dominican Summer League as a 17-year-old (119 wRC+), and while there are some questions about the hit tool, he is ahead of schedule at this point. His calling card is his raw power, which could be a monster tool at maturity. Speaking of maturity, Heredia already checks in at 6-foot-2, 200 pounds, so it will be interesting to see how much weight he adds in the coming seasons, and how that affects his speed. He stole 10 bases on 16 attempts in 64 games, but by the time he reaches the majors he could be a 40-grade runner. His ticket to fantasy relevance will be the development of his hit tool, particularly his recognition of offspeed pitches, which would allow his plus power to show up in games. Heredia will have to wait until next decade to reach the show, but his power and pedigree make him a worthwhile stash in deeper formats.
