2019 Fantasy Outlook
Brito crushed the ball for Triple-A Reno last season, hitting .318/.383/.540 in 114 games, but failed to replicate that success in 44 plate appearances in the majors, finishing with an awful .175/.227/.250 line. It's unwise to make a big deal over such a small sample, but Brito struggled in his prior tastes of the big leagues as well. In 175 plate appearances at the highest level (still a small sample, to be fair), he's hitting just .202/.229/.351, a number that wouldn't cut it as a backup catcher, let alone a corner outfielder. We can't completely give up on Brito, especially given his excellent minor-league performance, but there's still little reason to believe he can hit big-league pitching, and he's far from a lock to win an Opening Day roster spot. If he does get a spot and looks to be tapping into his potential early, he might be worth an add, but the odds of that are slim. Read Past Outlooks

Brito was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Brito was acquired by the Blue Jays from the Padres at the start of April but struggled massively with three hits and 17 strikeouts in 43 plate appearances. The 26-year-old could be headed to Triple-A Buffalo if he goes unclaimed on waivers.

Stat Review
How does Socrates Brito compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many of a batter’s balls in play go for hits.
  • ISO
Isolated Power. Slugging percentage minus batting average. A computation used to measure a batter's raw power.
  • AVG
Batting average. Hits divided by at bats.
  • OBP
On Base Percentage. A measure of how often a batters reaches base. Roughly equal to number of times on base divided by plate appearances.
  • SLG
Slugging Percentage. A measure of the batting productivity of a hitter. It is calculated as total bases divided by at bats.
  • OPS
On base plus slugging. THe sum of a batter's on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
  • wOBA
Weighted on-base average. Measures a player's overall offensive contributions per plate appearance. wOBA combines all the different aspects of hitting into one metric, weighting each of them in proportion to their actual run value.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA
The percentage of plate appearances where a batter had a batted ball classified as a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2016
Brito will look to win the Diamondbacks' fourth outfielder job this spring. A pair of finger injuries limited him in 2017, as he needed surgery during spring training to repair a dislocated left ring finger (his throwing hand), which kept him out until late May. He then fractured his right pinkie finger in the Dominican Winter League. In between the two injuries, he was exactly a league average hitter (100 wRC+) in the Pacific Coast League and stole six bases on seven attempts. He can play all three outfield spots and still has the tools to be an above-average defender, particularly in right field. However, he doesn't bring much to the table from a fantasy perspective. Offensively, he could produce like the current version of Jacoby Ellsbury, but that player wouldn't see everyday at-bats on a competitive team unless he had an albatross of a contract. The best-case scenario is that Brito's glove gets him into the lineup and he chips in double-digit steals, providing value in NL-only leagues.
Brito will be 24 years old when the 2017 season begins, and the Diamondbacks are still looking for the young Dominican to really break through. Part of the problem so far has been opportunity -- David Peralta and A.J. Pollock have outfield spots locked down, and Yasmany Tomas seems to have joined that group. But when injuries struck Peralta and Pollock last season and Brito got some playing time, he did nothing to impress. He posted an ugly .179/.196/.358 slash line in 95 at-bats, and he struck out 23.7 percent of the time. Brito was much better at Triple-A Reno, so it wasn't all bad in 2016. But Brito is going to have to show he can handle high-level pitching better to secure more playing time going forward. He might start 2017 at Triple-A in order to get more at-bats under his belt.
At 22 years old, Brito showed off his potential in 2015. The Dominican Republic product started the year at Double-A Mobile, where he hit .300 and led all minor leaguers with 15 triples. Brito also blasted nine home runs and stole 20 bases in 26 attempts. His performance led to a September callup with the big club, and Brito hit .303 (.385 BABIP) in 18 games (34 plate appearances). As he enters his age-23 season in 2016, the Diamondbacks' organization has to figure out what to do with its 2015 Minor League Player of the Year. David Peralta and A.J. Pollock have outfield spots locked down, but Yasmany Tomas is a question mark in right field, and Brito could force his way into the mix if he picks up where he left off in 2015. Brito could contribute across the board if given an opportunity, but it remains to be seen if the strides he made with his hit tool last season are legitimate.
