Kevin Cron
27-Year-Old First Baseman1B
Arizona Diamondbacks AAA
2020 Fantasy Outlook
Cron made his major-league debut in late May and went on to receive sporadic opportunities throughout the rest of the year. He showed good power in limited action but never truly got to establish himself. Meanwhile, Christian Walker finally established himself as the everyday starter at the position, hitting .259/.348/.476 in 152 games. Cron did manage an excellent .331/.449/.777 slash line at Triple-A Reno, but he'll be 27 years old in February, and we all know about the run environment at Triple-A in 2019, so that line isn't as exciting as it may seem at a glance. Cron looks to have enough in his bat that he could become an above-average hitter if an opportunity opens up, but not enough that the Diamondbacks will be compelled to move Walker to create that opportunity. There's 2018 Jesus Aguilar upside here, but that would require several lucky breaks. Read Past Outlooks

Could have role with universal DH
1BArizona Diamondbacks  AAA
May 12, 2020
Cron could serve as a designated hitter against left-handers in 2020 if MLB adopts a universal DH rule for all teams, Chris Murray of Nevada Sports Net reports.
ANALYSIS
In a normal year, Cron likely would have started the season at Triple-A Reno, but the coronavirus pandemic is causing MLB to consider changes that include National League teams using the DH. Under that scenario, the right-handed-hitting Cron could share DH with the left-handed-hitting Jake Lamb. Cron bashed 38 home runs at Reno last season and added another six in 71 at-bats for the Diamondbacks.

Stat Review
How does Kevin Cron compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many of a batter’s balls in play go for hits.
  • ISO
Isolated Power. Slugging percentage minus batting average. A computation used to measure a batter's raw power.
  • AVG
Batting average. Hits divided by at bats.
  • OBP
On Base Percentage. A measure of how often a batters reaches base. Roughly equal to number of times on base divided by plate appearances.
  • SLG
Slugging Percentage. A measure of the batting productivity of a hitter. It is calculated as total bases divided by at bats.
  • OPS
On base plus slugging. THe sum of a batter's on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
  • wOBA
Weighted on-base average. Measures a player's overall offensive contributions per plate appearance. wOBA combines all the different aspects of hitting into one metric, weighting each of them in proportion to their actual run value.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA
The percentage of plate appearances where a batter had a batted ball classified as a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.

2019 Fantasy Outlook
Cron reached Triple-A for the first time in 2018 and looked up to the task, hitting .309/.368/.554, good for a 137 wRC+. Those numbers are less impressive when considering that Cron was 25 years old and is primarily a first baseman, but the performance was strong enough to suggest that he has a big-league future, and enough for the Diamondbacks to protect him from the Rule 5 draft by adding him to the 40-man roster in November. With Paul Goldschmidt now in St. Louis, there's an opening at first base in Arizona, but the plan appears to be to move Jake Lamb there while having Eduardo Escobar play third base. Neither of those players are stars, though, so it's not inconceivable that Cron could get a look at some point.
