2024 Fantasy Outlook
Heaney once ranked among the top pitching prospects in the sport, but he's typically been more of an off-and-on fantasy streaming consideration rather than a reliable rotation option. The 32-year-old left-hander can at least point to the big World Series ring on his finger as he enters his 11th major-league season, along with the $13 million he's owed after exercising his 2024 player option with the reigning-champion Rangers. He would appear to be locked into an Opening Day rotation spot with Max Scherzer (back), Jacob deGrom (elbow) and Tyler Mahle (elbow) all on the mend through the season's first couple of months, but Heaney took a step back with his walk rate last year and remains a volatile pitcher both in role and effectiveness. He'll have attractiveness in spurts when he's occupying a starting gig with favorable matchups. Read Past Outlooks
Early exit Saturday
Heaney escaped with a no-decision in Saturday's 9-2 loss to the Astros, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks over 3.2 innings. He struck out only one.
ANALYSIS
The veteran southpaw also plunked Jose Altuve and uncorked a wild pitch, throwing only 42 of 79 pitches for strikes before his exit, and Houston had runners in scoring position in the first and third innings before finally breaking through for two runs in the fourth. Heaney's had a shaky start to his 2024 campaign, posting a 6.75 ERA, 1.58 WHIP and 10:7 K:BB through 12 innings over three outings, and he has yet to last five frames in a start. With the Rangers close to adding Michael Lorenzen (neck) to the big-league roster and Cody Bradford pitching very well, there's no guarantee Heaney keeps his spot in the rotation.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Could stick in rotation
Heaney could remain in Texas' rotation down the stretch after Max Scherzer was ruled out for the season with a shoulder injury Wednesday, reports Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News.
ANALYSIS
Heaney worked out of the bullpen for the first time this season in his previous outing Sunday versus the A's, but he could quickly be reinserted into the Rangers' rotation. The left-hander produced a 3.10 ERA over 72.2 innings for the Dodgers last season, but he struggled during the first half of 2023 with a 4.71 ERA in 17 starts. Heaney has been better since the All-Star break with a 3.06 ERA across 11 outings, which could be enough for him to start with Scherzer out for the year.

For a pitcher with a 5.83 ERA in 2021, Heaney had a ton of buzz last spring. Some fantasy players looked at his underlying skills and landing spot with the Dodgers, an organization esteemed for its player development, and envisioned a Robbie Ray-like turnaround. The logic was sound, but Heaney's body failed him once again. He hit the injured list a couple weeks into the season with shoulder trouble and only made it one start into his return before he was back on the shelf with inflammation in the shoulder. Heaney returned again in late July and pitched to a 3.77 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and a whopping 87 strikeouts in his final 57.1 innings spanning 13 appearances. Those strikeouts are sure to tantalize once again, but Heaney is on the wrong side of 30 and has reached 130 innings just once in close to a decade in the big leagues. While certainly not the worst endgame pick in the world, Heaney is not a good bet for volume. He landed with Texas on a two-year, $25 million deal this winter.
